A few weeks ago the Federal Government announced its plan to establish one university in each of the geopolitical zones in the country. The Federal Government has appointed Vice Chancellors and chosen sites for the proposed universities. Huge funds have also been released for the immediate take off of the institutions.
Notwithstanding that the Minister of State for Education, Kenneth Gbagi Esq. had announced that the Federal University would be located at Ikole Ekiti the institution has now been sited at Oye Ekiti. The announcement of the relocation last week led to a violent protest by youths in Ekiti State. In the process trigger-happy policemen killed five people.
While holding the Federal Government fully responsible for the unlawful killing of the innocent persons we call on the National Universities Commission to close down the 6 universities until law establishes them. The Accountant-General of the Federation is also requested to suspend the release of funds to the management of the universities until the National Assembly pursuant to Section 81 of the Constitution has appropriated them.
